Production surplus.
We all already know that the ham sector is in a deep sales downturn, being highly affected in Christmas, when it is the high season of this product, so that's why a lot of stockbreeders are being victims of the surplus of production since their sales previsions were incorrect.
It is very difficult to predict with accuracy the sales of a product for 4 years, since the pig is born until the ham is prepared for consumption. That's why a lot of companies are seeing that the investment is not returning benefits, because the volume of sold product and its price (according to the demands of the market) is being highly reduced.
Some companies are stating that their overproduction has reached 40%. It is not an exaggerate information, although the mean is around 30% of overproduction. This is why so many companies are closing or are selling under the price of cost, losing money. Other companies are saving money by producing worse quality hams, changing the feeding of the animal or the time of curing of the ham, among other facts.
From Juan Pedro Domecq we have always defended Iberico Bellota Ham of very high quality, an artisanal product, to which we devote the best care to the animals that live in freedom in the meadow. Since it is a limited production we can focus our efforts from the breeding of the pigs until their maturity making our hams a demanded product among big companies that still order it even in the current crisis.
